An epiphany
Today was the first day of my Napier University Product Design placement at the Scottish Design Exchange in Edinburgh.
Before I arrived, my thoughts tended towards being nervous – but as soon as I stepped into the George Street store, I became excited by all the possibilities.
The first meeting went really well, and my product idea was well received. I feel absolutely ready to take on this challenge and cannot wait to see what I can create and where this opportunity can lead me.
The idea I initially proposed was along the lines of laser-cut plywood puzzles and jewelry:
I then remembered a video I saw a few days ago about miniature self-sustaining terrariums.
These are something I have had an interest in for a long time, but did not put in the effort to create them myself.
Upon some more thinking and in the spirit of working on my self-esteem and pushing to achieve my goals, I have made a sudden decision to create micro-terrariums using moss, stones and branches I can find near my home, possibly some tiny crystals, in small jars which I can source for cheap or even for free. Upcycling is another passion of mine, and if I can protect the planet in any way, I should do so.

I would also like to use the Creality Ender 3 V2 Neo 3D printer I got for Christmas to make miniature figurines for a dinosaur-, fantasy-, or similarly themed small terrarium.
I printed out some 3D models from Thingiverse to test the printer. The wolf in the image is 2 cm in height including its tail.
I do not yet have enough space in my room to set up my X-Tool D1 20W Pro laser cutter which I purchased before Christmas, so I haven’t had time to play around with it and test what is within my capabilities. I’m thinking it could help me create acrylic enclosures, or even wooden bases, placards or decorations.
